As well as working with architects from the Qarta architektura office (Řezák + Wittassek) we also collaborated with artist David Černý on preparation of Fragment. The reason for this was to find a common language between architecture and art right from the very beginning. Thanks to this creative symbiosis we managed to find the best possible solution for the specific land, which the unique location directly opposite the Invalidovna building certainly deserves. From the initial negotiations between Qarta, Trigema and David Černý, we sought a suitable form and expression for the building being discussed. We did not want to create just a uniform building and fill in the remaining space with a statue. This meant we created the building together as a reaction to surrounding items and also as a contrast of new against old, with mature vegetation interconnecting these two elements.

The form of the project clearly indicates that it considers itself unique. But what is hidden below the surface and what should be pointed out to its fans and potential clients?
Premium housing in Prague has many forms. Attributes such as the centre of the city, the genius loci of the location and the surrounding area, above-standard services in the apartment or building, a luxuriously furnished designer interior and functional technologies, are perfectly fulfilled by FRAGMENT. And it is also capable of satisfying the burning need for parking, which is sorely lacking in city centres.
We can easily compare Karlín to the legendary phoenix. Although it did not rise from the ashes, but rather from the floods, it has managed to transform itself from a not very representative city district into an exemplary modern location, which is unique in Prague, over just under 20 years. Invalidovna, embodied in a beautiful Baroque building, enables construction of a building, which physically demonstrates the transition between the old and the new.
Without technical support the building would be an empty box. FRAGMENT aspires to be a technological example and a flagship of further technological progress. Elements such as green roofs, pre-fabrication, activated ceilings, retention tanks, a camera system or robotic reception should become proof of this.
When designing the interiors emphasis was placed on use of Baroque elements with a modern design, materials and surfaces. The design should be timeless and reflect tradition with a history.
David Černý and David Wittassek and Jiří Řezák on behalf of Qarta architektura are co-authors of the project. The building is conceived as a work of art – a supine solider, which is cared for by figures.
